Maybe Krypton had a atmosphere that required more sensitive ears to hear with and if was dark all the time maybe they evolved laser vision to help see things :P

thats the best explaintion I heard so far.... I could BS things by saying that he might be like a Sun Battery, in which the energy store inside his body can be let out and focus by the eyes like a laser beam. But.... so how would he fly in space? (being super strong does not make you float, and in space, you need a oposit force to push you off to change direction)

BLASPHEMER! Douglas Adams was a rare genius who was taken from us much too early.
I still think the passage I quoted makes the most sense.

You see, the secret to superman's flight in comic books is the artist's pencils. They give the illusion of him flying when he is really just stuck there in suspended animation on the page.
Now the movies are a different case, with the same sort of principles. In all actuality he is just having his image imposed on a moving background to give the look of flight while he is in a bit of suspended animation. And beyond that, the special effects artists do a similar trick to that of the comic book artists by taking many frames of him in suspended animation and strung them together to get the look of flight.
See Superman never flies, he just suspends his animation and special people make the surroundings seem as if he is flying.

Superman is so powerful he doesn't have to fly. He just sticks his arms out and the whole universe moves behind him.

hes a super human freak. he comes from a far away planet and we have no idea how they really lived. so mabey they after thousands of years of evolution, they have evolved beyond the need for gravity, and have learned to bypass it all together. as for being in space, his advanced people must have also figured out how to bypass the vacum of space to fly and sustain life out there. heat vision... he suks energy form the sun... very simple

How does he breathe in space? His metabolism has to work somehow.

It's all been said. I'd just to reiterate the best one mentioned so far is the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" Quote about flying...my god.. I loved the book/movie.
As for the space metabolism..well he is the man of steel, so many can harden his organs to withstand the cold of space! How he breathes in a vacuum is beyond me, though!

It's all in your head guys, Superman never did fly. You were just stoned out of your mind while watching the shows. I used to think Batman was Bruce Wayne when I was high! Boy did he show me I was wrong.

You kids watch too much Smallville. If I remember correctly from the original Superman movie and I think from the Superfriends cartoon from the 70's-80's(yes I'm old) all his "Super" powers come from the Earths yellow sun. Krypton had a red sun and differance in the way his body acts to the yellow sun's radiiation is what gives him his super powers.
I think somewhere(comics or tv cartoon) some baddie changed the earth's sun to red and he lost all his powers.
As far as how he actually flys, my nerdy guess would be he "wills" every molecule in his body to move in the direction he wants to go thereby defies gravity.
Heat Vision, no clue??? What about super cold breath? Doesn't matter how hard you blow, shouldn't be able to freeze anything. Also in Superman II movie he could teleport, what's up with that? Why doesn't he just do that instead of flying to wherever he's going.

ok I can't hide the secret anymore .... when Superman needs to fly he just contacts me and I hurl him into space with my great godly strength.
If I'm not up to it I just give him cab fare.
